Jupiter opposition Neptune: what is truth?

Jupiter opposition Neptune The Celestial Consonance by Dorina Costras.

Jupiter opposition Neptune is the major transiting aspect for September, affecting us on both the personal and societal levels. Exact on 17 September this transit will last all month and, if it touches one of your personal planets or points, could have a major impact on your religious and/or philosophical beliefs.

With Jupiter now at 9 degrees Virgo and Neptune in its rulership at 7 degrees Pisces we will experience a deep tension along this axis. On the one hand Virgo differentiates and categorises. She can become obsessed with perfecting details, she wants to check and recheck. On the other hand Pisces tends to blur everything together, unifying but also making things abstract and mysterious. While Virgo is so precise she sometimes becomes perfectionist, petty and critical, Pisces can be too vague and unclear.

With Jupiter opposition Neptune on this axis, we will be exploring themes of truth and how they relate to material reality versus the unmanifest, analytical understanding as opposed to inspired vision, detail and connectivity versus wholeness. As per usual with oppositions, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. We must find a way to bring the seemingly conflicting or competing ends of the spectrum into a complimentary relationship.

With Jupiter placed in Virgo there’s a fine ability to think critically and question ideas that may have been implanted via our socialisation, through education, family of origin or the media. Jupiter in Virgo deconstructs these ideas and analyses them for flaws in logic, discarding those that do not meet her high standards. On the other hand Neptune understands that even those ideologies that meet Virgo’s standard are still not necessarily true. This is because Neptune realises that we humans see only a small fragment of reality.

Although Jupiter can see many different view points, when under stress from difficult aspects or transits he tends to come down hard on one side or another. Jupiter loves to learn, to travel and to see things from other perspectives, but sometimes he can decide that he ‘gets it now’ and becomes a bit dogmatic and know-it-all. At other times he refuses to take up a position at all, seeing every view point as having value and deriding any suggestion of ‘absolute truth.’

Neptune too can go one way or another, becoming attached to an idealist and impractical version of reality, or floating from one illusion to another, the perpetual naive child taken in by every bizarre conspiracy theory or snake oil salesman. Neptune also asks unanswerable questions, such as: Is this really real or just a dream? Am I truly a unique and separate being or am I part of a greater whole? How can I be both separate and interconnected?

On a societal level we see Jupiter opposition Neptune played out in the drama of the European refugee crisis as competing interests broadcast their version of truth: nationalism vs. freedom of movement, retaining hard-won privilege vs. charity to those in need. For Jupiter there are as many versions of truth as there are people, while Neptune sees only oneness. There is no us and them, only we. Jupiter appreciates this but sees it only as another view, a view that while nice in theory is difficult to implement in practice!

The challenge with this transit is to avoid extremism: the potential dogmatism of Jupiter, or the naive gullibility of Neptune. Because truth is actually sometimes paradoxical. The trick is to be able to hold the paradox in our consciousness without trying compulsively to resolve it. This is easier said than done!

How will Jupiter opposition Neptune affect you?

Some people will feel Jupiter opposition Neptune very strongly while for others it will be more of a cultural phenomenon to inspire interest and curiosity. Those with planets or points between 10 and 13 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) will feel Jupiter opposition Neptune most strongly.

You can also look to see which Houses Jupiter and Neptune are passing through to get a sense of which area of your life might be most affected by the Jupiter opposition Neptune transit. You can work this out by looking to see where the signs of Virgo and Pisces sit on the outside of your natal chart. If you haven’t got one yet you can generate a free natal chart here.

Those who are personally affected by this transit will probably find their beliefs about the world, other cultures/subcultures and spirituality strongly challenged. If you’ve been a bit dogmatic about your beliefs, or perhaps caught up in avidly following a trend or leader, you may find yourself experiencing deep disillusionment as you realise how limited and limiting your ideas have been.

On the other hand, if you’ve been unable to take a stand on something, vacillating between one viewpoint and another, this may be a time when you finally come to a realisation about what it is you believe in. This may be painful but will ultimately be liberating. In either case this is a truth challenging time: what is your truth and what is Truth with a capital T?

Meanwhile in another part of the cosmos

Venus is moving into trine aspect with Uranus, exact on 23 September. For those personally affected, particularly those with planets of points between 16 and 22 degrees of the Fire signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) this may bring breakthroughs and new ways of working within relationships, especially if things have become a bit stuck or stagnant.

However the Moon in Scorpio is also moving into square aspect with Mars in Leo, exact on Saturday, so watch out for unexpected outbursts of resentful emotions, especially if you’ve been bottling things up. Fortunately, Venus trine Uranus will help integrate such outbursts, even if they’re expressed less elegantly than you might have preferred!

How have you observed Jupiter opposition Neptune?

Have you experienced Jupiter opposition Neptune in your own life and in the world around you over the last two weeks? Is your natal chart personally triggered by this transit? How is it challenging your understanding of truth? In what ways has Jupiter opposition Neptune been difficult or liberating for you?

  2. Hi Faith,

As you have most likely noticed I’ve only recently started responding more, and my understanding is catching up with me :)

I really find the archetype of the child and the woman coming into play with my chart – to me Pisces signifies my child, Virgo represents the woman I am trying to become, which is mature in a way that I cannot see the value in when I am simply playing around in the depths of philosophy as I like to do – I have been like a complaining child because others would not come out and play with me.

Do you have any advice for working with this tension and embracing what challenges this could throw up for me? I become petulant like a child when I cannot manage others’ perceptions of me! Is this Neptunian, to have concern with perceptions to the degree of becoming fixated on illusions … I remember in another article on Mercury retrograde in Libra (I think) you said about the danger of fixation. What are the characteristics of Virgo with regard to getting along with others? Is this archetype simply practical, kind of put your head down and work ethic, without too much regard for others’ perceptions of how she is working? I guess I would very much like some of that kind of ability not to fixate on others’ vision of what I am doing and of what is important to me

By the way thank you for welcoming me in your community and I look forward to the next post, as well.

    • Hi Liv… I’m so glad you’re gaining insight through your study here. Regarding your question on the Virgo archetype, did you get the email I sent you two days ago? You see you’re due a free mini reading and with your chart details I will be able to see a lot more about your particular Virgoan qualities… x

  3. Finally a huge transit with no influence of my personal planets… Whew! The moon in Scorpio square Mars though… Ugh. Things could get ugly, since it’s the 8th or 9th house…

  4. I have noticed this influence in the past two weeks in my life. I have become even stronger in my beliefs, wanting to learn more about them every single day, informing others more, and have been mulling over in my mind how I can make a career out of what I love… spirituality.

  5. Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! Lol I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
