Mars in Scorpio: the art of getting what you want

Mars in Scorpio The Neverending Dreamer by Cameron Gray.

On 30 October 2021 Mars moves into Scorpio where it is very happy. During this month we are likely to have a powerful drive and will power, as well as not a little libido! Everyone wants something and during this period we may be willing to sacrifice a lot more than usual to get it. During this time we’ll have an intensity of focus that has the potential to carry us a long way towards our goals.

Play with Mars in Scorpio as you would with fire. Although Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio and very strong in this sign, these two energies combine to create a fierce depth that can be very volatile. Sexual attractions can become compelling, jealousies can overwhelm us and the need to be in control seems somehow all important. In fact power and how we use it may be a key theme for many in the coming months.

During this period the things we want will come into focus with a clarity that may be very uncomfortable. Mars, our desire nature, the part of us that propels us into action, will be channeled through the filter of Scorpio willpower and focused intention. Our desires will be incredibly powerful, and our determination to get what we want will be even stronger.

Combine this with a t-square between Mars and the ongoing Saturn Uranus square in November and you get a very tense and volatile dynamic. Read more about that transit in my November forecast.

As a fixed sign Scorpio has the endurance and determination to outlast even Capricorn, if it wants something badly enough! Because the desire nature is so strong with Mars in the sign of Scorpio, there is great potential here to push through obstacles and challenges that one would never be able to overcome if Mars were in its rulership of Aries. Here we have the stamina of a marathon runner with her eyes firmly on the finish line.

Mars in Scorpio is an excellent combination for achieving success in the workplace and is especially powerful passing through either your 10th or your 1st house. It is also very helpful for carrying us through a difficult period in our lives, provided we are clear on what we want and where we are going. Mars in Scorpio is fueled by desire: if you don’t know what you want you won’t be going anywhere. Except perhaps into pointless fixation and frustration.

During this period the sexual nature will be heightened and there is a danger of becoming carried away by the intensity of our desires. Remaining unattached in not something Mars in Scorpio excels at, as our emotions makes it difficult for us to look at things dispassionately. We may feel compelled, as though by some magnetic force, towards the object of our desire and lose our ability to see things with a balanced perspective.

For those with strong Scorpio, 8th House or Pluto themes in the natal chart, Mars in Scorpio has the potential to be downright obsessive. This can lead us into some pretty dark territory, especially as we may not recognise we have lost our way. Jealousy, revenge, manipulation and violence are just some of the darker manifestations of Mars in Scorpio so take care!

Even in very calm individuals this placement may dredge up some pretty unpleasant emotions, particularly when the Moon is in challenging aspect. Aggression, anger and fear of losing control may all emerge over the coming months and will need to be met with compassion and empathy. This may be particularly challenging in the realm of intimate relationships as we encounter issues around power and control, attachment and vulnerability.

How will Mars in Scorpio affect you?

This Mars placement will resonate most strongly for those who have Mars placed in Scorpio or the 8th House natally. You may also feel it if you have strong natal aspects between Mars and Pluto. Those with planets of points in Scorpio will feel this energy most strongly as Mars transits these natal placements.

The area of your life that will be most affected depends on which house Mars is transiting through in your chart. For example in my chart I have Uranus in Scorpio in the 6th House so when Mars transits this point I expect some pretty powerful impulses towards change within my working life.

Working with Mars in Scorpio

Mars in Scorpio gives us powerful drive and willpower but we must have a clear vision of what we want if we are to make the most of it. For those without clear aims this energy can be more harmful than good. How do you intend to work with Mars in Scorpio over the coming months?

  1. Seven months, huh? But hey, Scorpio’s in it for the long haul…

Outmatch even Capricorn? My Mars is in Capricorn actually and with 4 planets in Scorpio, 3 in the 8th house (Libra – which is Scorpio energy too), 3/4 of a year will have Scorpio energy present. Phew! I have felt that for a while already: control issues, obsession with my partner’s time spent home/on “us”, passive aggressiveness (Libra), explosive outbursts (Mars passing over natal Saturn/Pluto conjunct in the 8th as well just recently)… Say hello to emotional deep waters.

Luckily Mars has already been transiting my natal Moon-Mars Square, so now it can start making positive vibes with transiting Pluto in my 12th house. At least that’s something ;-) My career can finally take a notch up I hope, since it transits my Sun and Jupiter in 9th house.

  2. Great article and info on Mars energy, however Mars in not retrograding and has not been retrograding this year from my research.

    • You’re right Sashti. Mercury was not retrograde in 2015 or so far in 2016. It goes retrograde on April 18 2016 and turns direct again on 30 June. Sorry if the article was unclear in this regard. It was a late night! x

It is with trepidation I await the effect of Scorpio on my two eldest children. Both have Mars in the 8th in their natal house. My daughter in Sagittarius and my son in Capricorn. My son has a stellium of 6 planets in Capricorn in his 8th house, including Mars at 14 deg, Venus 15 deg and sun at 17 deg. With Pluto hanging on top of these I am holding my breath.

    • Don’t be too worried… I would think it’s probably a good thing that Mars is in Pluto at this time as natal Mars and transiting Pluto are likely to ‘play more nicely’ in the conjunction. Not that it won’t be intense, but Mars will already be in the Pluto vibe so to speak… In my own chart Pluto is touching my natal Venus at 14 degrees Capricorn in the 8th House. It’s been a challenge but there have also been many gifts. x

  4. I have Mars in Scorpio in my first house. Can you tell me how this will me? Thank you.

    • Hi Julie… Any planet transiting the first house will always be particularly pronounced and when it passes over it’s own natal position it signifies the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one in relation to the affairs of that planet…

      • Thank you! This does sound like an exciting time. Maybe a little scary, as well? I feel like my Capricorn sun and Cancer moon don’t always make me the most adventurous person :)

        • Hey Julie… Yes transits can be a little scary at times but the best way is to relax into them and allow the change to happen without resisting. It’s easier said than done but it makes things much easier in the long-run. x

  5. Wooow, this is so exciting :) I would like to ask what could it mean in my chart, my Mars, Mercury, Sun, Pluto are all in Scorpio and all in 6th house, all of them well aspected. Would be so nice if someone would give me some clue what could that mean :) thank you!!!

  6. Hi… loved your article. I am pretty new here and still trying to grasp things. I wanted to undergo revision surgeries rhinoplasty and eyebrow lift and and I need to get it right this time. Can you please help me find the best date asap. I hope you will. I was born on 29 Oct 1988. In Raigarh Chhattisgarh India. Hope to hear from you soon. Love, Shruti

    • Hi Shruti… I’m glad you liked the article. Unfortunately I don’t do this kind of predictive astriology, but good luck with your surgery :)

  7. Hi very interesting article about mars. I am aries and i have mars in my 9th in aries i have stellium in 9th house. Mercury, Sun, Venus and Mars. does it mean more travel or less? as i think 9th house is about traveling. What do i focus on more if mars is in 9th. thanks love and light xx

    • A stellium in the 9th would generally mean more long-distance travel but it depends on how these planets are aspected. Working on expanding yourself through learning, study and the appreciation of other cultural viewpoints is a good way to work with 9th House energies.

  8. I can look back now and see exactly why certain things were happening, and I know now what gave me the uncharacteristic willpower and drive to push through the singular most difficult time in my (our) life. It explains everything so very clearly. Thank you.

  9. Hi I am a Mars in Scorpio native in the 5th house it is conjunct Neptune 1967. I am also a five planet stellium in Virgo. Any advice? Thank you

  12. I am 10th june 1970 born at 8:35am in jalandhar(India)please look at my horoscope and tell me about my mars period. I am eagerly waiting to hear from you.

  13. I have my Mars in scorpio situated in the first house. Also my moon hard aspected to Pluto in scorpio. Even with an air stellium this description suits me very well. I can be extremely vengeful even if I’ve objectively looked at the situation. It’s an urge that occurs subconsciously but I’ve tamed it. Astrology is beautiful..
