We’ve seen a lot of articles on Uranus square Pluto over the last few weeks as this important generational aspect gets closer and it’s clear that on a societal level this aspect is causing a lot of conflict and upheaval. But how will it affect our individual lives?

Firstly, it’s important to realise that this Uranus square Pluto, which occurs on 15 December, is actually the sixth of seven exact square aspects between these two harbingers of change. The seven exact squares are as follows:

  • 24 June 2012 – Uranus square Pluto at approx 8 degrees
  • 19 September 2012 – Uranus square Pluto at approx 6 degrees
  • 21 May 2013 – Uranus square Pluto at approx 11 degrees
  • 1 November 2013 – Uranus square Pluto at approx 9 degrees
  • 21 April 2014 – Uranus square Pluto at approx 13 degrees
  • 15 December 2014 – Uranus square Pluto at approx 12 degrees
  • 17 March 2015 – Uranus square Pluto at approx 15 degrees

Elaine Kalantarian describes Uranus and Pluto beautifully when she writes, “Uranus is the “awakener,” our astrological wild card. Functioning primarily as a catalyst for change, Uranus liberates by pulling the carpet out from underneath our carefully planned lives. Disruptive and destabilizing, but also progressive and innovative, Uranus is associated with technology and science, its use and misuse. Uranus is also like white noise, the static that disturbs the signal… Pluto represents the potentially destructive, titanic forces of nature, human nature included. Elemental, volcanic, seismic – Pluto is chthonic, he rises from the depths, transforming everything in his wake. He is a deep bass note, almost out of range. If you’ve ever heard the ground groan and rumble during an earthquake, you’ve heard his voice.”

You can read Elaine’s very thorough analysis of Uranus square Pluto at her site Blue Moon.

These two intense planets are in very different signs right now. Uranus is in rash, impulsive Aries, the warrior archetype, while Pluto is in steady, structured Capricorn. As I wrote in my article Transiting Pluto: everything changes this is something akin to a stand-off between a totalitarian overlord and a guerrilla revolutionary! The only thing these two have in common is that they are both in cardinal signs; they both want to be the leader!

As Elaine Kalantarian points out, a very close but not exact Uranus square Pluto aspect occurred in September 2011, coinciding with the Occupy Movement. Occupy embodies much of what this aspect stands for: free thinkers and revolutionaries rising up against the dominant paradigm and demanding change. The Occupy Movement spread like a virus from its starting point in New York City, transmitting itself via the internet and social media (Uranus). Events were eventually held in over 9oo cities in 82 countries. Since then, popular uprisings fueled by Uranus square Pluto have occurred, and in many cases transformed politics, in Algeria, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, Yemen, Iran, Spain, the Maldives, Mali, the Central African Republic, Eritrea, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Brazil, Egypt, Sudan and most recently in Hong Kong, the Ukraine and Venezuela.

Whether on a personal or societal level, the affect of the Uranus square Pluto aspect is both transformational and explosive. The last time the Uranus square Pluto configuration occurred was in the 1930’s. Uranus was in Aries then too, but Pluto was in Cancer. Here the controlling ‘mother-land’ (Cancer) was set against the independence of the people (Aries) leading to the Great Depression, which ultimately led to the rise of the welfare state, and the emergence of Nazi fascism in Germany.

When does the Uranus square Pluto aspect become personal?

Because Uranus and Pluto are so slow moving this is a generational aspect, affecting human civilisation as a whole. However you will feel it in your personal life if either Uranus or Pluto aspects a planet in your natal chart, and particularly if you have personal planets placed in the 9th to 15th degree of any of the Cardinal signs, that is in Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn. Of course you will also feel it if it aspects the chart of someone close to you!

As an example, in my natal chart I have Venus placed on the 15th degree of Capricorn and Uranus on the 15th degree of Scorpio. This places me right in the middle of the Uranus square Pluto action! At present I’m experiencing this mainly as increased irritability and sensitivity to criticism, difficulty taking advice or guidance and inner conflict between the part of myself that wants things to stay the way they’ve always been and the part of me that is crying out for change. Change in both my relationships and in the way I use my personal power. I’m being called upon to be more authentic, to address areas of my life that do not align with my values and to give up self-destructive habits.

Another thing to bear in mind is that just a few days later, on 20 December, while the Uranus square Pluto aspect is still more or less exact, Venus will conjoin Pluto in Capricorn. This will definitely bring the tension and change generated by Uranus square Pluto into the personal sphere! Venus’ connection to Pluto is likely to transform love relationships on a very deep level, and with the square to Uranus there could be some sudden new love affairs, probably ending as suddenly as they begin, or unexpected and painful breakups. Mercury also joins Pluto on 24 December so watch out for potentially explosive conversations and the impulse to air dirty laundry over the Christmas table!

Uranus can sometimes bring accidents when in stressful aspect, particularly in rash Aries, and Pluto can bring death. So keep your wits about you and avoid silly risks, especially when traveling during the holiday period.

Uranus square Pluto can certainly bring huge change in your life if your chart is personally affected. It certainly has in mine! Be prepared to let go of things that no longer serve you. Allow things to be as they are; acceptance of change allows us to develop and grow. Struggle and you will feel the full force of Uranus square Pluto’s awesome potential for madness and mayhem!
