Astrology of April 2021: moving towards social ecology

The Astrology of April 2021 sees the Sun, Mercury and Venus all moving through Taurus. This energy is usually very grounding, but in this case each of these fast moving planets will pass over Uranus at 9/10 degrees Taurus, triggering the square between Saturn and Uranus, which is the defining transit of 2021.
Saturn square Uranus will continue to have an impact on our social and cultural reality until the end of 2022. As the Sun, Mercury and Venus activate this energy during April, its impact will be manifest in our thinking, our creative manifesting and our relating.
Uranus in Taurus brings social justice into an Earth based context, that will ultimately transform how we relate to each other and to the Earth, and will broaden our understanding of rights to include not just humans but other sentient beings as well.
In square to Saturn in Aquarius, Uranus in Taurus will also help us restructure our society to become less hierarchical, taking as our model the networked interdependent structure of ecological systems.
This shift is already beginning to be felt. Since COVID lock downs began in March 2020, over a year ago now, I have been noticing a steady movement of people away from the cities to the rural area where I live. These city refugees represent an important change: previously people have moved away from rural areas and into cities, searching for employment and a better quality of life. Now, at least in Australia, they are moving back.
COVID has been a wake up call for many. City living removes humanity from their natural habitat, the production of food and our sources of water. With little connection to nature we can ignore the impact our lifestyles are having on the ecosystems of our planet. Meanwhile, overpopulation creates the perfect conditions for the spread of disease and the pollution of our atmosphere and waterways.
Uranus in Taurus represents humanity’s evolution into a more conscious way of relating to Nature and to each other. It represents equality not just of mankind but within the entire ecosystem. As the Sun, Mercury and Venus conjoin with Uranus during April, this evolution will become personalised, impacting our actions, our thoughts and words, as well as our relationships.

Those with planets or points between 4 and 14 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius), may experience Saturn square Uranus as internal conflict. This conflict will be between the conformist part of you that wants to be accepted and liked by society, versus the part of you that says, ‘to hell with your expectations, I’ll do what I think is right.’
Which of the two come out on top depends on which of the two planets is stronger in your chart. For example, an Aquarian generally has a strong Uranus, while a Capricorn has a strong Saturn. If you are personally affected by Saturn square Uranus, you can purchase a short 15 minute check-in to give you a heads up on how things are likely to play out for you.
During the the coming months Saturn also remains in sextile to Chiron. This supportive transit suggests that the great clash between Saturn and Uranus can ultimately have a positive healing impact. It suggests commitment to social healing and ‘doing the work’ that needs to be done to overcome cultural trauma and our shared history of oppression and division.
So, on to the astrology of April 2021…
On 4 April Mercury enters Aries. With Mercury in Aries there isn’t much beating around the bush when it comes to putting our point across. Aries is not known for tact or diplomacy and you might simply open your mouth and let fly with very little thought for the possible fall out. On the plus side you’re unlikely to get bogged down in indecision. Just take care not to be too rash.
On 9 April Mars squares Neptune. During this week we are likely to feel lethargic and lacking in motivation, especially when it comes to physical exercise or activity. However sextiles between Venus and Jupiter and Mercury and Saturn on 10 April make this a good time to put energy into relationships, especially making plans together or talking about what matters most.
On 12 April the New Moon rises at 22 degrees Aries as Venus in Aries squares Pluto in Capricorn. This is likely to be a pretty intense day and any time and energy you have put into your primary relationships in the previous few days will pay off now. Venus and Pluto are at 26 degrees so the New Moon will trigger the square, intensifying its impact.
During this Venus square Pluto there may be a strong desire to be in control and to gain success in your endeavours. You may even find yourself sacrificing the needs of others in order to achieve your goals. Bear in mind that when this transit ends you will come to realise how important the contributions of others are to the process and may regret alienating the very people who would be your allies.
On 14 April Venus enters Taurus where it rules and the self-centred energy of Aries that has been affecting many people’s relationships will end. Venus in Taurus is a potent reminder that we too are a part of nature’s beautiful relatedness. We may intellectualise, set ourselves apart from nature by talking objectively about ‘the environment’ when we all know deep down that we are inextricably linked to nature and her destiny. We are one.
On 16 April the Sun squares Pluto and we may feel a bit obsessed with our ‘work’ a little over absorbed or compulsive. Take particular care to rest and relax during the week surrounding this transit.
On 17 April we have a lovely energy as Mars trines Jupiter and both form sextiles with transiting Mercury. During Mars trine Jupiter good fortune is smiling on you. It’s time to go after your heart’s desire. Your decision making and communication are likely to be spot on as well.
However a square from Mercury to Pluto on the same day may cause you to obsess over things, and with Mercury in Aries you may get caught up in anger. Let it go. There is far too much potential good fortune to be had on this day to get caught up in negativity.
On 19 April the Sun and Mercury conjoin as they both enter Taurus. Ideas and action are briefly aligned and in Taurus this can lead to some very practical manifestation. This a a great day to create a vision board or conduct a ritual to bring something you are dreaming into being.
On 23 April Venus conjoins Uranus, the first of our three powerful square triggering conjunctions. In this case relating and relatedness are brought into focus. How can we bring the energy of Uranus in Taurus more into our relationships? How can our relationships honour personal freedom, equality and mutual respect of each person’s unique expression of self?
On the same day Mars enters Cancer and the agitated energy that characterises Mars in Gemini will calm. Traditionally Mars is in its ‘fall’ in Cancer, and can cause anger to be expressed imwardly or passive aggressively. However it can also bring greater energy and focus to our domestic sphere, especially parenting and the nurturing of those we love.
On 24 April Mercury conjoins Uranus, again triggering the Saturn Uranus square. Remember that Venus is only a hair’s breadth ahead of Mercury and on 25 April the two conjoin, exactly squaring Saturn.
With Mercury and Venus both conjunct Uranus and squaring Saturn, our ideas and manner of relating will be out of the ordinary, but duty, obligation and societal expectations will press in upon us. How can we integrate a new way of thinking and relating within an established social order? How can we balance these two very different energies, these two very different human needs?
On 27 April Pluto turns retrograde as the Full Moon rises at 7 degrees of Scorpio. This will be an intense day as the Moon will pass through a t-square with Uranus/Mercury/Venus in Taurus and Saturn in Aquarius. Internal conflict is highly likely for those with planets or points between 4 and 17 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius).
On 30 April the Sun conjoins Uranus as Mercury sextiles Neptune. The orb between Saturn and Uranus is wider now so there is less tension and our desire to manifest our vision of personal freedom, self expression and equality, whether in our personal life or more broadly, will be easier. Again, this is a good time to conduct a manifestation ritual. The sextile from Mercury to Neptune will facilitate connection to spirit and the channeling of wisdom from our higher self.
Apart from the ongoing square between Saturn and Uranus, and the sextile between Saturn and Chiron, there are no other transiting aspects from the outer planets in the Astrology of April 2021.
The Astrology of April 2021 represents a personalisation of the evolutionary process that is occurring due to Saturn square Uranus. By consciously taking time for manifestation during these important conjunctions between Uranus and the Sun, Mercury and Venus, we can actively use this energy to crystalise our intentions for change in our own lives.
