Astrology of June 2021: break free of self imposed limits

After the intensity of the total lunar eclipse on 27 May this is a good time for self-reflection and the astrology of June 2021 supports this.
The Astrology of June 2021 has two very different sides. On the one hand it’s all about recognising our self-imposed limits to change. On the other it’s about acceptance, and letting go of our struggle with reality.
As retrograde Saturn moves back into square aspect with Uranus, we may be experiencing an inner heaviness; sadness, perhaps grief and certainly limitation. We may feel constrained, claustrophobic or withdrawn. It may be difficult to explain to others the frustration we are experiencing.
This feeling of inner entrapment, of not being able to reach our full potential, is prompting us to explore our limitations. What’s stopping you? Are they real or self-imposed limits? This is a time to really look closely at our stories and ask ourselves if they are true.
Breaking out of self-created bondage is one theme of the Saturn Uranus square. On the other hand, this is also about acknowledging and accepting our true limits. Despite what we are sometimes told we cannot have everything. We cannot be everything, especially not at the same time!
Accepting the reality of our situation, whether that be limited time, physical constraints, illness, financial limits or family responsibilities, can be incredibly freeing. We can stop beating ourselves up for not being more than we are physically capable of being. We can stop feeling guilty for not being a superhero.
The Saturn Uranus square is the defining transit of 2021 and, due to retrograde motion, will make three exact contacts over the course of the year. This is the second pass and those with planets or points between 10 and 16 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius) will feel its effects throughout the month.
The introverted quality of this second Saturn Uranus square is emphasized further by Mercury being retrograde until 23 June. Over the course of the month, oppositions from Mars and Venus to retrograde Pluto will see our inner struggle externalized as we encounter people or situations that trigger us so stay awake!
All the details of the Astrology of June 2021
The Astrology of June 2021 begins with Venus entering Cancer on 2 June, just as the Sun sextiles Chiron. This combination facilitates nurturing communication in relationships and supports the healing of old wounds.
On 3 June Venus trines Jupiter as the Sun trines Saturn and Mars sextile Lilith. We are likely to be more expansive socially, self-confident and generous but with firm boundaries. Sexual energy is likely to be high.
On 5 June Mars moves into opposition with Pluto. Like all oppositions it is likely to foster projection and in this case we may find ourselves in a volatile and possibly aggressive power-struggle with someone. We may feel that this person is trying to dominate or control us. We may become obsessed with trying to control them. Probably it is our own self-control that we should focus on during this treacherous transit or we may find that there are repairs to be made in the days and weeks ahead.
On 5 June Mercury squares Neptune. This can be a very confusing time as our mind becomes cloudy and communication unclear. If you lashed out at someone during the opposition between Mars and Pluto this transit may make things worse before they get better. Deception and self-deception are common. Finding your way back to the quiet observer, through meditation or mindfulness practice, can help you to move out of ego mode and see things more clearly.
On 10 June the New Moon rises at 19 degrees of Gemini, inviting us to open our minds to new ideas gained through exchange with others. This New Moon occurs in conjunction with Gemini’s ruler Mercury, enhancing the connection between our mind and our emotions. This may clarify any confusion you’ve been experiencing over the past week.
The next day on 11 June the Sun conjoins Mercury exactly. Our minds and our magic are in alignment. Our thoughts and our words are particularly powerful and with the New Moon just hours past this is a wonderful time to set intentions for the coming month.
Also on 11 June Mars enters Leo a sign where this fiery, masculine planet is very happy. During the coming weeks we are likely to be more energetic, more motivated creatively and more physically well. On the other hand we may be more prone to arrogance or egotism, and we may act more in our own self interest. This is not always a bad thing!
On 12 June Venus squares Chiron. Ouch! Sore points in relationship may come up to be resolved, or we may be triggered by something someone says or does. Be alert. What we are reacting to now is unlikely to be the real issue. Try to identify what experience in the past may be causing the pain you are feeling now.
On 13 June Venus sextiles Uranus as the Sun squares Neptune. This is a strange energy. Relationships will feel spacious and free, however we may be prone to paranoia or self-deception. This is especially true as the Saturn square Uranus transit is almost exact and, if your chart is triggered, inner conflict is very likely .
On 15 June, Saturn square Uranus becomes exact for the second time, although we have been feeling this transit as a society for most of 2021. This time it may manifest in a more inward turning way, as Saturn will be retrograde. The planets connect at 13 degrees of Aquarius and Taurus respectively and there may be a sense of pulling back to regroup or of hidden or deceptive actions on the part of the powers that be as they try to maintain the status quo.
Rebellion against authority is a key theme of Saturn square Uranus. With Saturn in Aquarius, the sign of Uranus, we say that ‘Uranus rules Saturn’, suggesting that change will prevail in this clash against the status quo. It is time for things to shift towards greater equality, empowering new technologies and a new vision for the future, all things governed by Uranus.
The exact dates of the Saturn Uranus square are:
- 17 February 2021 – both planets are direct
- 15 June 2021 – Saturn will be retrograde
- 24 December 2021 – Uranus will be retrograde
The two become close again between 1 and 12 October 2022 but don’t make an exact contact but this means that we will feel the impact of Saturn square Uranus through most of 2022 as well.
If you are experiencing Saturn square Uranus on the personal level you will likely feel a tension between the conformist part of you that wants to be accepted and liked by society, versus the part of you that says, ‘to hell with your expectations, I’ll do what I think is right.’ Which of the two come out on top depends on which of the two planets is stronger in your chart.

On 21 June Jupiter turns retrograde in Pisces, enhancing feelings of contraction and opening up inner depths to explore. The planet of personal growth moves back into Aquarius on 29 July before turning direct again on 18 October. If there is any area of your life that has spun a little out of your control, this is a good time to get them in hand. Addictions for example.
Also on 21 June, the Sun enters Cancer just as Venus trines Neptune. This will be a lovely day to connect with loved ones as a nurturing, compassionate and empathetic energy will be strong.
However beware clashes and obsessive interpersonal connections with others as on 23 June Venus opposes Pluto. This transit may be felt for several days either side of this date and like the previous opposition between Mars and Pluto may tend us towards projecting our problems onto others. Avoid casting blame especially as Mercury turns direct on the same day and may facilitate the voicing of previously silent resentments!
Fortunately on the same day the Sun will trine Jupiter. This is an energy of optimism, buoyancy and creative good fortune which has the capacity to make us feel generous, grounded and abundant.
On 24 June the Full Moon rises at 3 degrees Capricorn. This is a call to grow up and take responsibility for our emotions. Even though it feels like they’re happening to you, actually you choose to feel the way you feel. Acknowledging this is the only way you can move on and begin to feel differently.
On 25 June Neptune turns retrograde in Pisces and we can explore the depths of our dreaming. If we remain aware, retrograde Neptune can help us understand what is real and what is illusory. Or it can take us deep into delusion and addiction. Neptune turns direct again on 2 December.
Finally, on 27 June Venus enters Leo. You may be feeling the urge to express your feminine side more openly and dramatically than usual. You’ll likely feel more confident about your style and appearance, more extroverted and less self-conscious.
Just be aware that Venus in Leo will activate the Saturn and Uranus square by t-square between the 5 and 12 July. This will bring the challenging energy of Saturn square Uranus into our relationships and if your chart is triggered it may erupt in a rather dramatic and fiery way!
That’s all for the Astrology of June 2021. See you next month :)
