Astrology of February 2021: Saturn square Uranus

Astrology of February 2021 Photo of Polish protests from the New York Times.

The astrology of February 2021 is less busy than January, in terms of the number of transits occurring, but the whole month is over-shadowed by continuing squares between Aquarius and Taurus, most importantly the much discussed square between Saturn and Uranus, which is likely to stir things up quite a bit.

The Saturn Uranus square is the defining transit of 2021 and, due to retrograde motion, will make three exact contacts over the course of the year. This is the first pass and, although it is not exact until 17 February, those with planets or points between 3 and 9 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius) will already be feeling its effects.

Rebellion against authority is the key theme of Saturn square Uranus and we can see its influence already in the recent riots in the Netherlands against COVID-19 curfews, protest against harsh new abortion laws in Poland, ongoing resistance in Hong Kong against Chinese government crackdowns, as well as in recent protests in Nairobi, Manila, Cape Town and Guadalajara, among others.

More on Saturn square Uranus later in this post, but now on to the astrology of February 2021.

On 1 February Venus enters Aquarius as the Sun squares Mars. Venus in Aquarius is generally a little detached and in terms of the over-riding energy of the month, this placement is likely to bring a certain sympathy towards those resisting or protesting established authority and injustice. However Aquarius is also able to cut someone loose without compunction and in situations where two people are unable to see eye-to-eye the energy of Venus in Aquarius may lead to a complete severing of ties.

On 6 February Venus conjoins Saturn, squaring Uranus the next day. With the ruler of relationships and connection activating the tense energy between Saturn and Uranus it is highly likely that conflict will spill over into our personal lives. Those whose charts are triggered with be much more strongly affected.

On 9 February Saturn sextiles Chiron. This supportive transit is a great asset and will remain within orb for most of the year, suggesting that this great clash between Saturn and Uranus can ultimately have a positive healing impact. Saturn in sextile to Chiron suggests commitment to social healing and ‘doing the work’ that needs to be done to overcome cultural trauma and our shared history of oppression and division.

If you’re new to Chiron check out Rose Birt’s incredible article the Journey of the Chiron archetype to understand better the role this energy will play in the current dynamic.

On 10 February Mercury squares Mars and, like the Saturn Uranus square, this is also between the archetypes of Aquarius and Taurus. Again the theme is change versus what is established. In this case it is likely to make people more aggressive in their thinking and communications, especially if you have planets or points between 15 and 21 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius).

On the other hand, with Mercury retrograde in Aquarius, this energy may well manifest internally. You know those sleepless nights you spend berating that person you’re mad at but never actually confront? In many cases this can be more damaging and counter-productive than the all out stoush and it may be worth asking yourself whether you need to bite the bullet and confront the person or situation that is making you angry.

On 11 February the New Moon rises in Aquarius as Venus and Jupiter conjoin and square Lilith in Taurus. The New Moon is at 23 degrees of Aquarius which means that in its dark phase it passes over and triggers the Venus Jupiter Lilith square at 12 degrees. This is a volatile and potentially explosive energy with themes of excessive rage, turmoil in relationships and, again, demand for change.

On 14 February, with Venus still within orb, Mercury moves back to conjoin Jupiter, squaring Lilith the next day. Be very careful at this time. If you are angry it may be better to write things down rather than say something you cannot unsay. Harsh words are highly likely at this time, especially for those with planets or points between 9 and 15 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius).

On 17 February, the big deal Saturn square Uranus is exact for the first time, although this transit has been affecting us since the end of January. With Saturn in Aquarius, the sign of Uranus, we say that ‘Uranus rules Saturn’, suggesting that change will prevail in this clash against the status quo. It is time for things to shift towards greater equality, empowering new technologies and a new vision for the future, all things governed by Uranus.

The exact dates of the Saturn Uranus square are:

  • 17 February 2021 – both planets are direct
  • 15 June 2021 – Saturn will be retrograde
  • 24 December 2021 – Uranus will be retrograde

The two become close again between 1 and 12 October 2022 but don’t make an exact contact but this means that we will feel the impact of Saturn square Uranus through most of 2022 as well.

Those with planets or points between 3 and 9 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius), may experience this transit as internal conflict. This conflict will be between the conformist part of you that wants to be accepted and liked by society, versus the part of you that says, ‘to hell with your expectations, I’ll do what I think is right.’

Which of the two come out on top depends on which of the two planets is stronger in your chart. For example, an Aquarian generally has a strong Uranus, while a Capricorn has a strong Saturn.

On 18 February Sun enters Pisces and this energy will bring an element of compassion and empathy into the mix which will be very helpful in ensuring that combative parties are able to see things from both perspectives. Pisces also moves the focus from all of humanity to all of existence, embracing animals, plants and ecology in its sense of justice.

On 19 February Venus squares Mars, a short transit that tends to stir up the energy in relationships. It can cause tension and conflict, but can also stimulate sexual attraction and interest in the opposite sex.

On 21 February Mercury turns direct which will open up channels of communication and help with clarity of thinking. As I mentioned previously, Mercury is currently in Aquarius, supporting a revolutionary mindset and making people more likely to accept new ideas and possibilities.

On 25 February Venus enters Pisces further supporting empathy and compassion between folks. On the same day Mars trines Pluto, Jupiter trines the North Node and the Sun sextiles Uranus. This is a powerful combination and actions initiated on this day are likely to be blessed, so long as they are in alignment with our highest good.

On 27 February the Full Moon rises in Virgo. At 9 degrees of Virgo the Full Moon makes a loose trine to Uranus in Taurus, suggesting that we can use this time to support change by clearing out what no longer serves us and creating space for something new to emerge.

Although the astrology of February 2021 features some heavy weather as the procession of squares between Aquarius and Taurus continues, all of the outer planets are now in direct motion. This means that the feeling of marking time that we all experienced so strongly in 2020, as we waited for the future to become clear, will no longer be so strong.

Things are shifting now and change will likely occur rapidly. Just hold on to your hats because it might be a wild ride!

Until next month,

X Faith
